Wimbledon Introduces Video Challenge Technology in 2025.

The Championships tennis court with replay technology

Wimbledon will follow the American and Australian Opens in implementing video review technology.

Video review technology will be launched at The Championships this year.

Competitors will gain the right to challenge particular calls made by the chair umpire, following the practice already in place at both the US Open and the Aussie major.

This technology will be accessible on Centre Court and Court One throughout the tournament and on the remaining featured courts when they are hosting singles contests.

This move follows just a season following the All England Club introduced electronic line calling, which terminated the 147-year tradition of line officials.

Reviewable Decisions

Competitors cannot to challenge the accuracy of the electronic line calling, but are allowed to ask for the official to review specific situations, such as:

  • Whether a tennis ball has bounced twice.
  • If a shot made contact with an rival's racket or person on the way past.
  • Possible interference at the conclusion of a point.

Importantly, there is no cap on the amount of reviews a competitor can request.

A Recent Example

An illustrative incident occurred in Indian Wells recently, where a top player used the review system against his opponent.

Draper admitted it was a difficult call for the official, but thought his rival had "used the regulations effectively."

The umpire watched a replay and ruled Draper was responsible for interference, awarding the point to his opponent.

Wider Implementation

This technology are not exclusive to major tournaments. It was adopted at the US Open since 2023 and the Australian Open since 2025.

Additionally, it is becoming more common on the WTA circuit, and by the coming year the ATP circuit plans to have the system implemented at every one of its tournaments.

Further Updates

A further change at Wimbledon this year will be the introduction of visual indicators on scoreboards to complement the audio calls from the ELC system.

This addresses instances where fans have occasionally been unsure whether a shot was out or in.

In other news, with exactly 100 days remaining until the start of the Championships, organizers have also announced an expansion in daily capacity at the qualifying competition in Roehampton.
